چکیده

We present a synthetic spectral analysis of IUE archival and FUSE FUV spectra of the peculiar dwarf nova WW Ceti. During the quiescence of WW Ceti, a white dwarf with Twd ∼ 26, 000K ±1000K can account for the FUV flux and yields the proper distance. However, the best agreement with the observations is provided by a twotemperature white dwarf model with a cooler white dwarf at Twd = 25, 000K providing 75% of the FUV flux and a hotter region (accretion belt or optically thick disk ring) with T = 40, 000K contributing 25% of the flux for the proper distance. We find from the FUSE spectrum that the white dwarf is rotating with V sin i = 600 ± 100km s. Our temperature results provide an additional data point in the distribution of WD Twd versus orbital period above the CV period gap where few WD Twds are available.

HST Spectra of GW Librae: A Hot Pulsating White Dwarf in a Cataclysmic Variable

We have obtained Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra of the white dwarf in GW Lib, the only known non-radially pulsating white dwarf in a cataclysmic variable, and the first known DAZQ variable. The UV light curve reveals large amplitude (10%) pulsations in the UV with the same periods (646, 376 and 237 s) as those seen at optical wavelengths, but the mean spectrum fits with an average white dwar...

Telescope Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the Dwarf Nova

We obtained three consecutive HST spectroscopic observations of a single superoutburst of the dwarf nova VW Hydri. The spectra cover the beginning, middle, and end of the superoutburst. All of the spectra are dominated by strong absorption lines due to CIII (1175 Å), Lyman alpha (1216 Å), NIV (1238 Å, 1242 Å), SII (1260-65 Å), SIII (1300 Å), CII (1335 Å), SIV (1394 Å, 1402 Å) and CIV (1548 Å, 1...

On the occurrence of dwarf nova outbursts in post novae

We show that irradiation of the accretion disc by the white dwarf limits the occurrence of dwarf nova outbursts in post nova accretion discs. After the nova explosion, the white dwarf has to cool for up to ∼ 100 yr – depending on the orbital period (i.e., disc size) and the temperature of the white dwarf after the nova-eruption – before the disc can begin producing dwarf nova outbursts. During ...

A Universal Decline Law of Classical Novae. Iv. V838 Her (1991): a Very Massive White Dwarf

We present a unified model of optical and ultraviolet (UV) light curves for one of the fastest classical novae, V838 Herculis (Nova Herculis 1991), and estimate its white dwarf (WD) mass. Based on an optically thick wind theory of nova outbursts, we model the optical light curves with free-free emission and the UV 1455 Å light curves with blackbody emission. Our models of 1.35 ± 0.02 M⊙ WD repr...

We present observations of the dwarf novae GW Lib, V844 Her, and DI UMa. Radial velocities of Hα yield orbital periods of 0.05332± 0.00002 d (= 76.78 m) for GW Lib and and 0.054643± 0.000007 d (= 78.69 m) for V844 Her. Recently, the orbital period of DI UMa was found to be only 0.054564± 0.000002 d (= 78.57 m) by Fried et al. (1999), so these are the three shortest orbital periods among dwarf n...
